Kursk was not the largest tank battle10/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In the Freeze book that during this period of time Stalin was not only having generals executed to divert attention to his failures but he was seen as an icon for national unity which could explain how much bloodshed the Red Army was willing to give in order to win. In the article The Crucible at Kursk, that after the Battle of Kursk they Soviets knew that the Germans could not capture or maintain since they would not pay the price in blood the same way the Soviets would due to them being prepared to sacrifice their lives in the name of the ‘Motherland’. The Germans underestimated before this encounter as at the beginning of WWII they counted the Russians having 200 divisions which by August of 1941 grew to 360 and under counted the amount of tanks which was around 50% the actual amount the Russians had (Freeze pg. The article says that this was a turning point in Germany losing the war and in my opinion is a land version of the Battle of Midway. The manpower was also pretty big as the Soviets had 1.3 million troops while the Germans had 900,000 men which shows how much they had planned for this and both sides understood that their would be heavy losses. In the article Seventeen Moments in Soviet History,it tells the legendary story of the largest tank battle in WWII which is pretty crazy as they not only combined for a total of 6,300 tanks between the Germans and Soviets. This is an image of the Soviet infantry charging in with these tanks at Kursk. ![]()
